Every hosting provider's changelog now has an AI line item — smart caching, AI-assisted malware scanning, chatbot support, one-click AI site builders. Some of it is genuinely useful. A lot of it is a rebrand of a feature that already existed. Here's what we found when we actually tested the AI-labeled features across the plans we benchmark, rather than taking the marketing copy at face value.
What We Tested
We ran the AI-branded features available on the mid-tier managed plans in our regular test pool (the same $30-100/mo band we use for our other comparisons) against three questions: does it do something a non-AI feature couldn't already do, does it measurably change performance or support outcomes, and does it add latency or overhead anywhere in the stack.
AI-Assisted Caching / Predictive Prefetch
A few providers now market “AI-optimized caching” that claims to predict which pages to pre-warm based on traffic patterns. In our testing this behaved functionally identically to a well-tuned rules-based cache warmer on predictable traffic (blogs, docs sites), and showed a modest edge — low single-digit percentage improvement in cold-cache TTFB — only on sites with genuinely unpredictable traffic spikes (viral social referral patterns). For a typical content site with steady, predictable traffic, this is not worth paying a premium for over a standard well-configured cache layer.
AI Malware/Security Scanning
This is where the AI label is doing real work in some cases. Pattern-matching signature scanners (the older standard) miss novel or obfuscated malware variants; ML-based scanners we tested against a known malicious-file test set caught a noticeably higher share of obfuscated variants than a signature-only scanner from the same provider's older plan tier. This is a case where “AI” is a legitimate technical upgrade, not just a name change — worth prioritizing if security scanning is a decision factor for you.
AI Chatbot Support
Mixed results. For simple, common questions (how do I reset my database password, where's my DNS panel), the AI chatbots we tested resolved the query correctly and faster than the average human-support queue wait. For anything involving an actual account-specific issue — a stuck migration, a billing dispute, a performance regression — every chatbot we tried eventually escalated to a human, sometimes after a frustrating few rounds of unhelpful suggestions first. Treat AI chat as a faster FAQ, not a replacement for real support on anything nontrivial.
AI Site Builders
Genuinely useful for what they're built for: generating a first-draft layout and copy for a simple brochure site from a prompt. Every one we tested still required significant manual cleanup for anything beyond a generic template — image selection, copy accuracy, and structured content (pricing tables, multi-step forms) all needed hand editing. Good for a fast starting point, not a finished product.
Adoption Numbers vs. Actual Usage
Providers frequently cite adoption figures for these features (“X% of customers have AI caching enabled”), but default-on features inflate this number without reflecting deliberate uptake. When a feature ships enabled by default, “adoption” measures inertia, not preference — worth keeping in mind when a sales page cites an adoption percentage as evidence of value.

Not as a primary factor. Core fundamentals — uptime, TTFB under real load, support responsiveness for actual incidents — still separate hosts far more than any AI feature we tested.
Are AI features free or a paid add-on?
Split roughly evenly in our sample — some providers bundle AI scanning/caching into existing plan tiers, others gate it behind a higher tier or per-feature add-on fee. Check the specific plan's feature list rather than assuming.
